Dreamland Reading
Consulting services for schools that improve literacy instruction and reading outcomes
A More Powerful Paradigm
Dreamland Reading focuses on reading-to-learn from an early age, because children begin reading-to-learn as soon as they pick up a book. The common framing from the National Reading Panel that “students learn to read from kindergarten to third grade and read to learn from fourth grade on” misses a key part of childhood development.
A toddler picking up a board book full of pictures, a 4 year-old who picks up a magazine and a 5 year-old who picks a book from a library about national parks are all reading to learn. Conventional thinking misses this key element of the highly complex process of how children develop into readers.
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
Margaret Mead
Our Approach
We offer strategic planning, workshops, on-site coaching and data analysis to support schools in providing the most effective instructional practices to meet student needs. We implement scientifically-backed reading instruction models, and combine the best of learning sciences and creativity practices, to support students, teachers and leaders in dramatically increasing the percentage of students reading on grade level.
By building on children’s natural love of language and story-telling, and elevating teacher skills, Dreamland Reading helps schools achieve their goals, while having fun getting there.
